nelchThere were several musicians in Cleveland who’s musical ability had a great impact on him. This includes Pastor Johnny Williams, Professor James Wade II, Rosetta Otey, Phillip Nowden, Glen Brackens, Tommy Woods, Pastor Steve Gulley, Bobby Mitchell, Udell Hicks, Pastor Paul Carrington, Professor Richard Smith, Anne Jones, Recardo and Remardo Sales, just to name a few.

From that time until now, he has played for churches throughout Cleveland. This includes New Joshua B.C., 2nd Mount Carmel B.C., Mount Esther B.C., and presently Mount Olive B.C. and 2nd Mount Olive B.C. After moving to Norristown, Pennsylvania in April of 1985, Elder Askew became affiliated with the Music Ministry Workshop, Rev. Freddie Washington, president. He has played for several workshop recordings and has appeared on the Bobby Jones Gospel television show several times.

He has obtained a great respect in the gospel music community. He has also played throughout the country enhancing the service of the King. Elder Askew, who has served as the National President of the House of God National Choir Convention Workshop, now serves as the first National Minister of Music for the House of God. Elder Askew conducts Music Workshops and Seminars for the enhancement of the ministry of music in the local church.

From the music ministry , Elder Askew was called to the ministry of God’s Word. Elder Askew preached his initial message, “2 Roads, 2 Trees, and 2 Foundations”, on November 15, 1981 to a standing room crowd of over 500, at the Mount Esther Missionary Baptist Church pastored by the late Rev. Kelly Wright.

From Mt. Esther, Elder Askew joined the House of God church in January of 1982, where he has not only pastored in Cleveland but also in Portsmouth, Ohio. He is presently a National and International Evangelist, National Mass Choir Director, and Minister of Music for the following:

2nd Mount Olive Baptist Church
Northern Division Conference
Northern Ohio State Conference

Elder Askew is presently a member of the Shiloh Temple House of God under the pastorate of Bishop Steven L. Best. There he serves as Church Administrator, Sabbath School Teacher, Assistant Bible Study Teacher, and Associate Minister.

Elder Askew is married to the former Calethia Lorraine Vouse of Norristown, Pennsylvania. Married since June of 1985, they presently have 3 children, Gonelcha Stephen II, Alaina Michelle, and Timyra Elaine.

Elder Askew is also on staff at the William A. Gaines Funeral Home. July of 1997, he serves as Chapel minister, Musician, and Service director

Elder Askew’s ministry of the word and music has taken him to many cities throughout the United States, such as Los Angeles, Oakland, Sacramento, Memphis, Louisville, Philadelphia, St. Petersburg, Atlanta, Orlando, Detroit, Brooklyn, Chicago, Fort Wayne, Atlantic City and many others. His ministry has crossed many denominations including, Baptist, Full Gospel Baptist, Church of God in Christ, A.M.E. Zion, A.M.E., Disciples of Christ, Pentecostal, and others. Elder Askew is a friend and brother to many in the Body of Christ and is a source of inspiration, motivation, strength and empowerment.

Elder Askew now has a CD out entitled, “Organ Instrumental Volume 1”. This CD is a tribute of God’s inspiration upon his life.

It is Elder Askew’s goal to reach the world with the truth of God’s word. To the end that sinners will be converted, saints will be edified, the sick will be healed, the bound will be set free, and unclean spirits will be arrested by the power of God. It is Elder Askew’s goal to hear the Lord say “Well done thy good and faithful servant!”.

“If I can help somebody, as I travel along, then my living, WILL NOT BE IN VAIN!”. “Touch somebody’s life as you pass them, for you may never pass this way again.....you’ll be surprised how soon, that same touch COMES BACK TO YOU”.
